This
is where the money goes!
The
retaining wall
which was the scene of controversy from 1968 to the present day has
been partly removed. After successfully removing crucial evidence the
day after Dr. Kings assassination by cutting down trees and clearing
the area. The City of Memphis have managed to remove the final vestiges
of the scene of the crime. Many individuals including the King family
subscribe to the theory that James Earl Ray did not slay Dr. King from
the Bathroom window, but according to William Pepper, author of "Orders
to Kill" the late Earl Clark, a Memphis Police Captain fired the
fatal shot from the bushes above the retaining wall.
Those
days are gone. So what you may ask, is the point investing $8 million
recreating a "walk-thru" tourist experience. The National
Civil Rights Museum need to look beyond increasing visitor figures and
concentrate on building a real-life testimony to civil rights by echoing
the deeds of Dr. King by "becoming their brother's keeper".
There is injustice, squalor, deprivation and poverty within one mile
of their ivory tower - why not for once, do something about it.
